Bicas

I love this art film about a community bike recycle place in Tuscan. I am a sucker for bike art too.

Ximitrius

Oaxaca, Mexico is an amazing town in the heart of Mexico south of Mexico City. We were there for Nacho Libre. The town had a lot of art going on. It was also a great place to spend the ''Day of the Dead'' (El Día de los Muertos). Anyway, I bought this small piece from a street / stencil artist that had some of his work on boards. The artist had his stuff set up in the gallery of Rene Almanza more about Rene soon.

play

Some snaps from this summer's Lake Powell trip. I love watching the kids make up games. With a single soccer ball they played for hours. Against the wall, in the water, your turn, my turn, you win, I win. LP is a magical place.

Springville Museum of Art

Big "M" and I did The Springville Museum of Art religious art show. There was a few cool pieces there. We had a good time talking about art and we drew a few pictures. Here are a few iphone snaps. The bottom piece is a local artist that I am quite fond of Fidalis David Kanoanikie Buehler.

love this...

I have always loved this piece and I am getting more interested in the artist these days, does anybody have any favorite biographies on the man?

One of 200 or so paintings for an upcoming video project, more info later.

Day Job

All this blogging about art and what-not you might not know that I make a living as a film guy. Here is shot of me at my day job.

fine art photography by Big "C"

Yesterday I had a guest artist in the office, Big C. We did some drawing, played with cars, watched a William Wegmen video, watched Nacho Libre, and he did some fine art photography. You can tell by the beautiful composition that I have smashed the screen of my camera, you only see the lower right part of the screen. Big C is my son and he is 5 years old, he rules.

The Marvelous Doug Snow

Today was artist V. Douglas Snow’s memorial services in Torrey, Utah. Doug said he didn’t want to have a funeral and if he did have one he didn’t want his wise guy best buddy artist friend Tony Smith to talk at it. You guessed it, Tony spoke at Doug’s funeral today and it was lovely. Kind words were spoken about Doug and his incredible sense of wonder. He loved his family, reading, travel, music and of course art. I loved hearing about his art night with friends, drawing in restaurants and stuff like that. Someone said his favorite word was Marvelous. The service ended with a brilliant slide show of Doug’s work and photos of his studio played to his favorite opera music. Doug was an amazing idea man and a gifted talker, if you have an hour I recommend listening to this amazing interview with Doug done by the equally gifted talker, KUER’s Doug Fabrizio.
Also there is a nice write up of Doug here.

Southern Utah Weekend

I am always impressed with the kids when you set them loose in the great outdoors. Climb rocks, jump down sand dunes and just go nuts. We are in Southern Utah to chill with the grandparents, also went to Doug Snow's memorial service, more about that in a minute. But there is something magic about watching the kids get dirty, sweaty and sometimes bloody.

the most loved men

I sometimes ask cyclists:
Who are the most loved men or people in cycling?
If you made a top 5 or 10 list I would bet that Phil Liggett and Paul Sherwen are on that list or least they should be (in my opinion).
I got to, kind of, work with (or along side) them during the 2004 Tour de France .
Here is one of the pieces we did with them.
Anyway, this photo is from the OLN after the Tour party in Paris. Paul was getting down on the dance floor. When I got home I made this painting of him. Thinking about Paul’s dance moves makes me happy and want run up and down the Champs Ellysees skipping and jumping over bushes (this one thing you can do when you are happy). Anyway, I wanted to keep the painting generic and not say “Paul Sherwen dancing in Paris.” Noelle thinks that I should not write on my paintings, but for now I like it.
Phil and Paul I love you guys!
Amen.

sketchbooks / journals

Noelle blogged about journals today, for weeks I been thinking of getting out my journals and snapping a photo or 2. Here they are. I have been keeping these medium sized journals since the mid 1990's. I am inspired by the journals of Spike Lee for writing and Peter Beard for the mess and collage style.

LP Chillax

This one of my favorite photos of Noelle at Lake Powell. Lake Powell has become an important place for our family to relax. We bought a 30 year old cruiser boat and it changed everything. Lot of swimming, hiking, relaxing, art projects, make shift concerts and just good chill time with the kids. (photo: Noelle catching up on some sewing)

Performance Art - Halloween

Okay for Halloween I was Project 1000. The goal was to take 1000 photos of friends and goofballs dancing and acting like fools, because that is what you do at the Call's Halloween party. It is the best party of the year in these parts. Between 4 photographers we ended up with 2100 photos, Check out 500 photos here and 500 there.
